It seems a strange destiny that a natural plant formation should have developed in the heart of a mangrove, which is the case in Voh, in the north-west of New Caledonia. In 1990, a photographer called Yann Arthus-Bertrand was going to make it a worldwide famous star!

In the book, Earth From Above, which was published in 1999 and has sold more than three million copies, photographs of the site feature in prime position on the cover!

The photo itself, shot by photographer and reporter Frenchman Yann Arthus-Bertrand, dates from 1990.  In 2004, just a few years after the publication of Earth From Above, the book, Yann Arthus-Bertrand produced a documentary of the same name, which was to make Coeur de Voh definitively world famous.

Since then, the photographic representation of Coeur de Voh has been published multiple times by magazines around the world. A quarter of a century after the shot, the symbol is still as strong as ever, and New Caledonia can only be proud to count it among its associations.

In the heart of the mangrove

Nothing seems more conventional basically than this natural clearing of four hectares, that has grown in the heart of the mangrove at Voh on the edge of the lagoon. The saline flats are the areas around the mangrove that have relatively little plant life and that, when seen from above, have a practically-perfect heart shape.
